The imagination fiction does good business now, but there are certain situations which have been changed. So so, that they became a genre cliche, and all know what to expect then. If you are an author in an imagination genre, here 6 cliches which you should try to avoid in your histories.
1. Reception of training from the old wise person.
Gambit ' Merlin ' as it is used in the Lord of rings, Star wars, Dragonslayer and incalculable clones of King Arthur. The steady boy or other low born type similar apparently are taken under a wing of the local odd fellow. Usually there is a beard involved, and pair of the dark blue eyes getting from under some effectively dense eyebrows. He will tell things as: ' All nature one ', ' Use force ', and ' you have a big destiny, my boy. ' Try not to give it a grey raincoat and elven a sword. Probably you could try to have the youth training the old man for a change? Or, more radical, how about presence of the teacher as the old woman?
2. Studying to struggle.
Gambit ' Galaada '. The steady boy receives confidential training in arms, resolving it to break the tempered soldier in its first struggle. People speak: ' I never saw similar before ' and ' He is the best fencer whom I ever saw '. Now, how much realistic it? The radical idea would consist in having the steady boy who is completely useless in the weapon. How it is going to execute its destiny then?
3. From all you ever knew division.
Gambit ' Dika Whittington '. The steady hand which is under geas to finish the big searches, should tell good-bye to the centre and home. People speak: ' I should go and execute the destiny ' and ' I will come back, when I revenged for the father '. It usually becomes with a considerable quantity schmaltz and emotions. It is sometimes made furiously, the hero separated from a family by the villain of a part, whom it is intended to kill in the end of history. Any by, it became so often, that any tears which you expect to cause, could occur because of laughter. Try to make something another. Why the hero should leave the family? What would happen, whether took it them with it?
4. To be stolen from the earth to the various world.
Gambit ' John Carter '. People speak: ' As I have made I reach here "and ' you have put us at our o'clock of requirement '. This was hard abused in early and the middle of the twentieth century by the Exhausted Equestrian H and E Merritt among others. Usually it - is no more, than dodge to receive character about which the author is the convenient letter in an imagination situation where the told character never could exist differently. Edgaru Rice Burroughs it was pleasant so, it even has made so that it happens with Tarzan as required. And it still happens, the most obvious modern examples which are Thomas Covenant and various modern characters as which Stephen King has employed in the Dark number of the Tower. Probably your hero could be someone from other measurement who is transported to the Earth? Or probably it remains, where it, but all moves it?
5. A multirace bar.
' Hotel in the Broth ' gambit. It happens much in Star wars of a wing of science fiction, but it the same as is extended in an imagination genre. After the day exhausted with thirst on road our heroic steady boy and its partners will visit hotel. Inside, there will be representatives of various races from the world created for history. The owner of hotel always will be full and cheerful, in a dark corner always there will be a silent stranger, and someone will sing the silly song giving to the author its chance to brag by its invention potustoronnej lyric poets. How about presence of the person, trying to receive a drink in a bar only for the dwarf, or on the contrary? There Should be a lot of possibility to add intensity there.
6. Detection of the latent family trues.
' the Ugly Duckling ' gambit. The steady boy reaches final highest battle, only to find, that its opponent - the father/mother/brother/sister etc. People speak: ' It has been kept from you to protect you ' and ' you cannot kill me, I am your father '. It was so abused, it even rises through genres: witness Luke Skywalker resisting Darth Vader for example. Change should make so that the hero has found, that it suddenly - the prince, or even the king. It speaks more about own desires of the author, than it does about plot. Imaginations of acceptance wished for valid usually do not do strong histories. But what would happen, whether the hero already knew the background, but its opponent has not made?
Following time you read history of imagination, the account, how many from the aforementioned is still in use. I think, that you will be surprised. It is even worse in a film and TV where all of them can occur in any cinema, and often do. Only look at Star wars is contained the majority of them, and has still made the huge sums of money.
And it also why the aforementioned should be with a salt pinch. At Clichés still there is a place in popular culture. Only do not take it as the justification to use them directly. At least it is not too frequent. |
