Legal aid, the professional legal given help, or it is free or for the nominal sum, to poor people in requirement of such help.

In criminal cases the majority countries—especially in what the person accused of a crime, enjoys the assumption innocence—provide services of the lawyer of who has insufficient own means. In some countries offices of the defender with the paid personnel, or publicly or confidentially supported as found, were the most economic decision. In other countries where there is no shortage of the lawyers qualified in criminal law and practice of test, private lawyers undertake this duty appointed court or chosen by the accused person directly.

In many countries these private lawyers do not receive compensation or only the nominal payment brought or the state or from welfare funds. In increasing number of the countries a condition the state of fund, sufficient to bring an adequate payment and to defray all allied expenses as believe, it is necessary to guarantee, that the person receiving this help, receives appropriate service.

Traditionally, in many countries as one of the duties of public service enclosed to practice of the law, lawyers also undertake to give legal aid in civil cases.

The problem of maintenance of legal aid has obtained an increasing international recognition. In 1958 International Association of lawyers sponsored the organisation of the International Association of the Legal aid, which purpose to (1), collect and assert, that the directory of all agencies of legal aid in each country, (2) collect and distribute the information and concerning the services rendered by such organisations and concerning laws, and other conditions regulating legal aid in the various nations, (3), develop services for a direction of cases on the basis of mutual service among co-operating agencies, and (4) encourage establishment of services of legal aid in all countries where they can be necessary and co-operate with associations of lawyers, with the judicial power, social security agencies, and other international organisations interested in distribution and improvement of service of the defender and legal aid.

The requirement for such international organisation has been recognised by League of the Nations in 1924 and later the International Red Cross and other international agencies interested in social security, especially what deal with moving. In addition to creation of knowledge and understanding about professional service which is essential to justice departure in the free country, the program of the International Association of Legal aid advances the international goodwill and cooperation.
