Tyson in Trouble

Tyson in Trouble
Author: Julie Smith
Controversy comes back to the ring since Mike Tyson one of the best known boxers in the world could be sent to prison one more time.

Tyson was found under the influence of drugs when he was driving his car in Scottsdale, Arizona. The policemen found a bag of cocaine in the boxer’s back pocket and another one in a package of cigarettes in his car.

The former heavyweight boxing champion was charged with two felonies for drug possession and two misdemeanour counts of driving under the influence of drugs. If he is convicted of all four charges, he could be sentenced to between 2 and 7 years. Mike Tyson was convicted in Indiana and served three years in jail for the rape in 1992 of a Miss Black America contestant. This time the 40 year old was stopped by police after leaving a nightclub on Friday.

Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history in 1986 when he was 20 years old and knocked out Trevor Berbick. Four years later he was knocked out by James “Buster ” Douglas. By 1997, Tyson’s career hit its lower point when he bit Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight.

Andrew Thomas, the Maricopa County prosecutor said that Tyson’s record made him eligible for prison instead of Arizona’s drug treatment programs for non-violent offenders.

Tyson got back into the ring recently for a series of four-round exhibition fights. When he announced the world tour, he told reporters he was deep in debt and wondered if people would still pay to watch him fight.
